Our second download is from Black Thought and Culture. It is an excerpt of Kenneth Bancroft Clark's chapter "The New Negro in the North" found in Unpublished Papers of Kenneth B. Clark in the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress. Read Clark's examination Dr. King's style of leadership and how it was more effective in the South.

Inauguration Day

We're celebrating the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States with a look back at the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln. Two free downloads, from Images of the American Civil War and The American Civil: War Letters and Diaries, give us an inside look at the 1861 inauguration.

Our first download is a photograph of Mary Todd Lincoln in her inaugural gown. The photo is found in Images of the American Civil War.

Our second download is from the diary of Margaret Sumner McLean. Written in March of 1861, McLean describes the tense feeling leading up to Abraham Lincoln's inauguration and the enhanced security at the Capitol.

Every two weeks, we take one complete work from Classical Music Library and make it available for download, either as an MP3 or WMA file. Available now is Glinka's Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila, performed by the Orchestre d'Etat du Palatinat Rhenan; Kurt Redel, conductor.

Classical Music Library is available on the Web, through annual subscription. You can access the collection now and browse its contents for free. You will only be prompted to log in when browsing the deeper in the collection.
