Food Studies Online Becomes a First-of-its-Kind Collection

October 28, 2015
Alexandria, VA – Alexander Street, a leading provider of digital content for libraries, announced the release of a new, first-of-its-kind collection, Food Studies Online. This new collection brings together 80,000 pages of primary archival materials, images, and secondary works, plus 200 hours of documentaries and series to provide resources to those teaching and studying in the emerging field of food studies.

Alexander Street worked extensively with a scholarly editorial board composed of librarians, faculty, and practitioners to identify relevant and valuable materials that would align and support food studies curriculums in this new and exciting area of study.

Food Studies Online includes works about how food shapes and defines people’s lives through the eyes of philosophers, historians, scientists, sociologists, artists, anthropologists, activists, physicists, psychologists, chefs, artists, and others. Topics include the evolution of utensils, hunger, menu design, food policy, ethics, urban food production, eating disorders, religious diets, food waste, and more.

“We are excited to release Food Studies Online at a time when so many in society are engaged in discussions around food habits and food systems. The collection will give lecturers and researchers what they need to explore the role food plays in shaping individual identity, culture, and the world around us," said Marcilyn Mann, Editor, Social Sciences at Alexander Street.

Food Studies Online is available for purchase or annual subscription, and users may request a free 30-day trial at alexanderstreet.com/food. Individual videos are also available for purchase at academicvideostore.com.
