Human Rights Studies Database Honored by Choice Magazine

January 23, 2018

ANN ARBOR, MI, – The Human Rights Studies Online database, from Alexander Street, a ProQuest Company, was recognized by Choice as one of the magazine’s 2017 Outstanding Academic Title award-winners for curating and contextualizing human rights atrocities from the 20th and early 21st centuries.

Human Rights Studies Online provides documentation, analysis and interpretation of important events – including the Holocaust, Cambodia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Rwanda, Darfur, Chile and many others. Through primary and secondary sources in text and video, it offers multiple perspectives on the full scope of each event, from the historical context that made such violations possible to the international response, prosecution of perpetrators, and steps toward rebuilding. Curated in collaboration with an advisory board of respected scholars, it gives victims of these tragedies a greater voice.

“As compelling and challenging as it is comprehensive, Human Rights Studies Online is an immensely valuable, even unparalleled, resource – not only for expanding awareness about mass atrocity crimes, but also for encouraging resistance against them,” said John K. Roth, Edward J. Sexton Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Claremont McKenna College. “Its content can bring one to tears but inspire defiance as well.”

The Choice review of Human Rights Studies Online highlights its easy-to-use interface and sources that are “not easily accessible elsewhere.” The review also notes that the collection “offers students and researchers a range of excellent primary sources and coverage extensive enough to suit historical researchers and those seeking context for more recent news events.”

“Genocide, violence, and other human rights violations are complex and difficult subjects to study. But telling victims’ stories is critical – not only to preserve their memories, but to prevent the reoccurrence of these atrocities,” said Nathalie Duval, Publisher, History Collections at Alexander Street.

Human Rights Studies Online joins a list of Choice Outstanding Academic Titles selected for their excellence in scholarship and presentation, the significance of their contribution to the field, and their value as an important – often the first – treatment of their subject.
