New Collection Brings Mental Health Diagnostic Criteria to Video

July 21, 2016

ALEXANDRIA, VA Alexander Street today announced the launch of a new collection that will, for the first time, bring to video format the concepts of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders®, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) and the World Health Organization’s International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10).

Diagnosing Mental Disorders: DSM-5® and ICD-10 illustrates and explains the most common disorders and their coding within each manual. The collection aims to give students and healthcare providers greater insight into mental health disorders and their classifications and provide a means of understanding the diagnostic tools used by clinicians in practice.

To create the collection, Alexander Street partnered with educational film producer Classroom Productions to create a series of films that align directly with the twenty most often diagnosed mental disorders as defined in the DSM-5® and ICD-10. Each program uses dramatic scenarios with professional actors to demonstrate the characteristics of a given category of mental disorder, and includes interviews with expert professionals in the field of mental health.

The collection includes twenty-one individual video titles covering:

  • Diagnostic Criteria
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders
  • Bipolar Disorders
  • Depressive Disorders
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders
  • Trauma-Related Disorders
  • Dissociative Disorders
  • Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders
  • Eating Disorders

  • Elimination Disorders
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Sexual Dysfunctions
  • Gender Dysphoria
  • Impulse and Conduct Disorders
  • Addictive Disorders
  • Neurocognitive Disorders
  • Personality Disorders
  • Paraphilic Disorders
  • Other Conditions

“The DSM-5® and ICD-10 are required tools for all mental healthcare providers,” said Taney Shondel, Senior Editor at Alexander Street. “The goal of this collection is to help students and practitioners understand the diagnostic criteria and coding systems featured in these manuals to better prepare people for the challenges they will face in their day-to-day practice.”

Diagnosing Mental Disorders: DSM-5® and ICD-10 is available for subscription or perpetual purchase. Librarians and faculty may request a free 30-day trial at alexanderstreet.com/dsm5.
