New Public Library Video Database Launches at Alexander Street

February 11, 2016

Alexandria, VA -- Today Alexander Street announced the release of a new, comprehensive video database especially for public library patrons. With 42,800 cross-disciplinary videos, Public Library Video Online: Premium  is the largest video collection for public libraries; almost double that of the leading competitor.

Public Library Video Online: Premium includes every kind of video material available: documentaries, interviews, performances, news programs and newsreels, field recordings, commercials, how-to videos, and raw footage. Public library patrons will have access to thousands of award-winning films, including Academy®, Emmy®, and Peabody® winners.

Content from more than 1,500 leading distributors, producers, and filmmakers is represented, and more than half the content is available exclusively from Alexander Street. Top content and brands include:

  • CBS / 60 MINUTES
  • PBS
  • BBC
  • NBC
  • Dallas Telecourses
  • Dennis O’Rourke
  • Berkut Dance International
  • Broadway Theater Archive
  • First Run Films

  • Stanley Milgram Series
  • Stanford Prison Experiment
  • Bloomberg
  • The Open University

“Patrons of all ages and walks of life will find exciting material in this collection,” said Stephen Rhind-Tutt, president of Alexander Street. “Not only is it one of the largest collections of quality documentaries on the web, it also includes feature films, how-to, and important television programming, like 60 MINUTES.”

Subject strengths include feature film, history, news and current events, theatre and drama, education, anthropology, business and economics, diversity studies, nursing, Allied health, science, engineering,  fashion, criminal justice, and more.

In addition, subscribing libraries will receive perpetual rights to videos they select at the end of each annual term. Libraries with subscriptions beginning January 1, 2016 are eligible. The number of videos per year is commensurate with the amount of the subscription, and libraries can utilize an entire year of usage data to support their selections. The longer a library subscribes the more titles it can keep.

The collection offers state-of-the-art search tools, scrolling transcripts, COUNTER Release 4 usage statistics, a customizable website for media hosting, and the support of a dedicated Account Manager. Librarians may request a free thirty day trial at:
