New Videos Prepare Incoming Students for College Life

October 4, 2018

ANN ARBOR, MI – When students transition to college life, they face many challenges that extend beyond the classroom – including time management, stress management, career planning, changing relationships and more. They need resources that prepare them to handle the realities of higher education.

The new Student Success video series, available through ProQuest’s Academic Video Online subscription product, was designed to meet this demand. Based on the Cognella Series on Student Success, a collection of books from academic publisher Cognella, Student Success videos offer practical, research-based advice to help college students develop the skills to support a happy, healthy and productive higher education experience.

“I have seen many students from top-ranked public and prep schools placed on academic or social probation during their early years of college. Students seem to be lacking the social and emotional skills necessary for success, such as time management, communication and organizational skills, as well as stress management,” according to Monica Reinhard-Gorney, M.Ed., a former school counselor with 18 years of experience in the field. “The Student Success Series arms students with the social-emotional skills they need to have more successful outcomes in college and beyond.”

The Student Success series includes the following 20-minute films:

In addition to the new Student Success series, Academic Video Online includes more than 64,000 titles spanning a wide range of subject areas including anthropology, business, counseling, film, health, history, music and more. “The Student Success video series is a crucial resource for new students, as well as anyone who works with students – including residential life, orientation staff, counseling centers, faculty and librarians,” said David Parker, Senior Director of Product Management, Alexander Street, a ProQuest Company. “We’re thrilled to work with Cognella on the content for these videos, and to make them available on the ever-growing Academic Video Online, the most comprehensive video subscription available to libraries.”

“The Cognella Series on Student Success helps new students cope with the challenges of starting college,” said Kassie Graves, Vice President of Editorial at Cognella. “We couldn’t think of a better partner than ProQuest to bring these student-selected topics to life on screen. We’re all very passionate about education, and we believe that the Student Success series – both books and videos – will help new students succeed throughout their academic careers.”

“Most students and parents anticipate the academic challenges that come with transitioning to college,” said Dr. Richard Parsons, an expert featured in the video on stress management. “However, research indicates that the psycho-social pressures that accompany a new level of personal independence can result in academic failure and can also have a negative impact on a student’s overall well-being. The material in this video series positions students in a way to maximize and embrace their social, emotional, and academic growth. I am so proud to be part of it.”
