University of West London Brings Academic Video Online: Premium ‘to Own’ and Video Commons to the UK

March 15, 2016

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – Today, the University of West London announced that they are the first higher education institution within the UK and Ireland to provide Alexander Street’s new Academic Video Online: Premium service to patrons.  The service combines the largest set of licensed video content available to academic libraries with a free hosting service for institutions’ own video content, known as Video Commons.

Academic Video Online: Premium is the flagship and best-value academic video collection from Alexander Street, offering nearly 50,000 academic video titles to institutions globally. As part of a unique “Subscribe-to-Own” model, on the anniversary of the subscription, university staff will use detailed metrics to evaluate the most-viewed titles and select those they’d like to incorporate into their permanent collection, ensuring optimum return on investment.

Louise Penn, Head of Resources and Technology, University of West London, said, “We are delighted to bring this exciting, new evidence-based model for video to the University of West London. With the purchase of this additional content we can support our teaching and learning agenda throughout Schools in a more interactive manner, particularly in practitioner-led areas, such as psychotherapy, nursing, film and media, and music technology. We look forward to developing our collections further as this subscription progresses.”

“We are thrilled that the University of West London has added Academic Video Online: Premium to its existing portfolio with us,” said Adam Gardner, European General Manager at Alexander Street. “It builds on previous findings from M25 Library faculty regarding their use of and demand for academic video to support technology enhanced learning requirements. This new model offers the most comprehensive, most affordable video solution for libraries to support those demands and to satisfy students.”
