Groundbreaking New Collection Revolutionizes Study of Disability Community

March 21, 2016

Alexandria, VA – March 21, 2016 – Alexander Street today announced the launch of a landmark primary source collection in the field of Disability Studies, Disability in the Modern World: History of a Social Movement.

In the years following the launch of the first Disability Studies program at Syracuse University in 1994, both public awareness of and interest in this field of study have grown dramatically. History, the arts, political science, education, and philosophy are just a few of the disciplines where the collective intellectual and creative output of the disability community has historically been absent from the scholarly record. This collection fills those gaps with 150,000 pages of primary sources, supporting materials, and archives, including for the first time the complete digitized run of the Disability Rag and its successor, TheRagged Edge, along with 125 hours of video related to disability studies and the history of the disability community.

Concurrent with the launch of this collection, Alexander Street has incorporated a number of assistive enhancements to its platform, making it fully JAWS compatible as well as ADA Section 508-compliant to the highest degree possible.

One person in seven experiences disability, yet the story of this community and its contributions has hardly been told,” said Kathleen Saylor, editor at Alexander Street. “With this database, we want to bring to libraries the materials needed to study interdisciplinary topics through the lens of disability. We are proud to be part of the effort to preserve key historical sources from the disability community.”
