March 2009
American History in Video is live. AND it's openly accessible through April 30th. No username or password required. Access it now at
http://ahivfree.alexanderstreet.com
Providing the largest and richest collection of video available online for the study of American history, it so far includes over 1,260 titles totaling roughly 420 hours of rare newsreels, archival films, and important documentaries from leading producers like The History Channel®, and it's continuously growing.
- Music Online cross-search is live. Subscribers to Alexander Street's music collections can now cross-search all their music listening, scores, and reference content through a single search. This change makes Music Online the broadest and most comprehensive resource available for the study of classical, jazz, world, and American music. It’s the only music service that delivers audio recordings, video content, full-text reference materials, musical scores, liner notes, biographies, and images through a unified interface. It has taken years to develop this level of cross-search functionality, and this launch represents a significant milestone in digital reference.
If you’re already a music user, watch for your activation notice. We’re activating customers for the new Music Online service over the next few days. (The tracks in African American Music and Smithsonian Global Sound® for Libraries will be added to the cross search interface around August.)
- Counseling and Therapy in Video launches in April.

This online video collection, ideal for training in social work, psychology, multi-cultural studies, and other areas, includes hundreds of hours of streaming video. The sessions are hosted and edited by leading psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and academics in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Demonstrations, training videos, actual therapy sessions with real clients, reenacted sessions, lectures, discussions, and workshops give students and instructors exciting new tools. Supplementary materials include transcripts, discussion guides, and teaching aids. Never before available online, the videos expand instruction to include both theory and practice; teach students to follow non-verbal communications, unlike textbooks or journal articles; and provide an on-demand resource for Continuing Education (C.E.) credits. You already have access to the big names and canonical writers, such as Wordsworth and Byron, but what about the others? Writings by women… travel and exploration narratives… scientific writing… gothic literature… social & political writing? Now, Alexander Street brings scholars and students the rest of the canon. There are critical editions from the preeminent Pickering and Chatto of London, including reproductions of original texts, all unavailable elsewhere online; the full run of the core Romanticism journal The Wordsworth Circle; rare and hard-to-find materials, many published between 1800 and 1830; and exclusive contextual essays by leading scholars, commissioned for this project. The Romantic Era Redefined is an important resource for English literature, comparative literature, cultural studies, gender studies, history, and women’s studies. Learn more about the collection

CHOICE Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, January, 2009
"An ambitious undertaking. . . . Integrates the volumes and audio samples into a fully searchable resource. . . . The site shares the look and feel of other Alexander Street products and will prove intuitive for anyone proficient in online resources. . . . The Playlist feature (a highlight of other ASP products) enables users to assemble text and audio content into annotated lists and share them locally or with subscribers at other institutions. . . . Indispensable for institutions offering undergraduate courses on world music or graduate degrees in ethnomusicology, and perhaps anthropology. Summing Up: Essential. Lower-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers."
- The Gilded Age
CHOICE Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, March, 2009
"Features approximately 40,000 pages of primary source material [and] . . . offers some excellent scholarly secondary material, such as critical documentary essays and related audio and video files, for supplementing the primary sources. . . . The database includes a user-friendly, interactive time line. . . . A good addition to college and university libraries supporting scholarship in American history or American studies."
- Theatre in Video
Reference Reviews, Volume 23, No. 2, 2009
"Unique content and usability. . . . With over 500 hours of film, this growing information outpost has vast potential for students, scholars and teachers. . . . Overall, Theatre in Video has a lot to offer an academic library and should be considered seriously if an institution has a theatre or drama department. ASP continues to grow and supply useful products. There are frequent updates to the look and usability of databases and Theatre in Video is bound to evolve into an even larger and more functional product."
