An important new partnership between Alexander Street, a ProQuest Company and Royal Shakespeare Company streams filmings of performances by renowned actors

ALEXANDRIA, VA, February 9, 2018 – The Tempest, King Lear, Hamlet and other famous performances filmed at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Stratford-Upon-Avon theater are now available to students and educators through ProQuest company Alexander Street.

Thanks to a new partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and distribution label Opus Arte, ProQuest customers have access to high-definition, surround-sound recordings of these plays – and the accompanying creative interviews, production images, teacher packs and study notes for each. Performed by the world’s best Shakespearean actors, including David Tennant, Simon Russell Beale and Sir Antony Sher, this is the first time these plays are available online in the educational marketplace.

Thirteen Shakespearean performances are currently available, with more content to be added in the future. Customers can access these plays with Academic Video Online, through Alexander Street’s demand-driven acquisition program, or by single-title subscription or purchase. The plays are also available as part of the newly launched Theatre & Drama Premium database, the world’s first and largest integrated resource for teaching and studying theatre arts and dramatic writing.

“It is really encouraging to see that Alexander Street will be providing access to 13 productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company,” said Winifred Fordham Metz, Head of the Media Resource Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s University Library. “Works such as these, with some of the world’s finest Shakespearean performers, offer incredible value and infinite potential as teaching and learning resources.”

“We are delighted to announce this ambitious collaboration. The RSC is committed to giving as many people as possible the chance to see and experience our work,” said Jacqui O’Hanlon, Director of RSC Education. “This new streaming partnership provides a cost-effective way for schools and universities to access high-quality cultural experiences.”

“We are honored to work with the RSC and Opus Arte to bring these performances to a wider audience,” said Will Whalen, Director, Global Content. “Particularly for students and researchers in the performing arts, the time and cost of traveling to see these productions can be prohibitive. This partnership opens up avenues for learning that might otherwise be unavailable.”

Alexander Street now offers the full recordings and accompanying materials for:

  • Henry IV Part 1
  • Henry IV Part 2
