Interface FAQ

We’ve launched a powerful new interface for our online products, and all of our video and audio collections, plus select text resources, are available there now. Collections now available on the new interface are listed in the chart below. All other Alexander Street Press collections will be made available on the new interface on a rolling basis.

All permanent URLs, such as links to clips, playlists, bookmarks, and embed codes, related to the collections listed below now automatically point users to the new interface.

If you’ve placed links in LibGuides or other resources, or your faculty members have embedded links in their LMS or syllabi, they will all redirect to the new interface. All embedded code will continue to function as usual.

Many features are now available, with even more launching over the next academic year.

Here’s what you can experience now:

  • Powerful faceted browsing capabilities: Browse content with “smart facets” that change as you search, allowing you quickly to find exactly what you’re looking for. It’s as if the interface knows what you’re asking.
  • A new video player and toolbar that lets you bookmark your place in a video and choose between multiple layouts; and bit-rate streaming that automatically adjusts to the highest quality file the user’s bandwidth can support. This is all in addition to the functionality you expect from Alexander Street video: thumbnails, visual table of contents, and clip and playlist creation.
  • A waveform view on our audio player pages that lets you view the music being played and create, annotate, and share audio clips.
  • Discipline- and genre-based landing pages with featured content and editorially-curated playlists.
  • The ability to translate every page, liner note, and transcript into dozens of languages using Google Translate.
  • Tools for exporting citations in MLA, Chicago, and APA formats.
  • Most content within the video products displays alongside searchable, scrolling transcripts.

And here’s what's coming soon:

  • Outbound discovery—your Alexander Street content will link out to select Internet archives, greatly expanding the content available to your users at no charge, and all semantically indexed to make it cross-searchable with the other Alexander Street content.
  • Fully text-searchable liner notes displayed along select albums.
  • And more. See a full list of current and forthcoming functionality here.

Music reference customers

If you have access to any of our music reference collections (Classical Music Reference Library, African American Music Reference, or The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online), these resources remain on the existing platform for the time being. We will alert you when they are available for cross-search with your Alexander Street audio collections on the new interface.

Permalinks and embed codes

As of August 2014, even if your pointers use the URLs for the older platform, all URLs automatically redirect to the new interface.

System requirements

MARC records

You will not need to delete or reload MARC records. All MARC records for the collections listed above redirect automatically to the new interface.

Discovery services

If you use Primo, EDS, Summon, or WorldCat discovery services, all URLs have been updated to direct users to the new interface.

Playlists and clips

On the new interface, you can continue to access the clips and playlists you created on the old interface. Simply login to your account on the new site, using your existing login credentials. If you have bookmarked or embedded a link to a playlist or clip, the link will automatically redirect to the clip or playlist on the new interface.

Usage statistics

We now offer a new usage stats portal to obtain your institution’s usage information of collections on our new interface. This portal offers many benefits, including COUNTER-compliant reports (v.4), SUSHI-enabled reports, and customized reports you can export by title, subject, and collection.

To access the new stats portal visit

If you already have an account on the previous stats website, you may use those log-in credentials on this site.

If you need to create an account on the new portal, please contact us at support [at] alexanderstreet [dot] com.

You may continue to view stats for the “old” interface only at

For terms and definitions related to the NEW stats portal, please see Appendix A of the COUNTER Code of Practice for eResources.

When will this interface be available for my other Alexander Street collections?

We will continue to make our remaining collections available on this new interface throughout 2015. We’re rolling them out on an iterative basis to allow us to respond quickly to customer needs. When we make those migrations, we’ll always provide at least a several-month window to allow you time to become comfortable with the new features.

Please contact your account representative directly or email us at support [at] alexanderstreet [dot] com with any questions, suggestions, or comments.
