Alexander Street Press Releases Award Winning Film On Adults Living With Their Parents

OCTOBER 25, 2011 (ALEXANDRIA, VA) -- Filmakers Library, an imprint of Alexander Street Press, announces today the addition of In My Parents’ Basement to their catalog of film titles.

Filmed over a nine-month period, In My Parents’ Basement provides a window into the lives of three adult children who have returned to their parents’ homes to live – Bob, 34, has lived with his parents for two years; Nancy, 42, moved back into her mother’s basement three months ago; and Denise, 26, lives in her parents’ basement with her husband, David.

Regardless of the circumstances that prompted each of the subjects to move back into their parents’ homes, it becomes clear that they are all constantly plagued by future dreams, past failures and the difficulty of moving on.

“This film sheds light on a situation that is becoming increasingly more common today than ever before,” said Linda Gottesman, Co-founder of Filmakers Library. “Unfortunately, the state of our economy today is forcing more adult children to live with their parents again – a challenging and frustrating experience at times. In My Parents’ Basement shows real examples of the mental and emotional strain that this can take on both children and parents, making it a great resource for future psychologists and social workers.”

In My Parents’ Basement received the Silver Award at the Houston International Film Festival in 2002.

In My Parents’ Basement is currently available for purchase on DVD. Later this month, this title will be available online in streaming video through Alexander Street’s Academic Video Store at http://academicvideostore.com, and as part of Alexander Street’s Filmakers Library Online collection.

A preview of this video can be found on the Alexander Street Press YouTube channel. For more information on In My Parents’ Basement or to order the DVD, visit http://www.alexanderstreet.com/filmakers.htm. Qualified faculty and library staff may request trial access and pricing information for Filmakers Library Online by emailing sales [at] alexanderstreet [dot] com ( sales [at] alexanderstreet [dot] com).

NISO and UKSG Announce Five New KBART Endorsements

September 16, 2010 – NISO and UKSG are pleased to announce the addition of five new organizations as official endorsers of the joint recommended practice, KBART: Knowledge Bases And Related Tools (NISO RP-9-2010). This Phase I publication, published in January 2010, contains practical recommendations for the timely exchange of accurate metadata between content providers and knowledge base developers.

The most recent organizations to endorse KBART are: Alexander Street Press; Annual Reviews; EBSCO Information Services; Innovative Interfaces, Inc.; and Royal Society Publishing. These companies join the American Institute of Physics, Ex Libris, OCLC, and Serials Solutions on the list of formal endorsers. All content providers, from major databases to small publishers, are encouraged to publicly endorse the KBART Recommended Practice by submitting a sample file to the KBART working group, at kbart [at] niso [dot] org (kbart [at] niso [dot] org). Endorsement is finalized once the file's format and content has been reviewed and approved, and the provider has made it publicly available (in line with the recommendations).

Sarah Pearson, E-Resources & Serials Coordinator at the University of Birmingham and UKSG co-chair of the KBART Phase II Working Group, stated, “The joint NISO/UKSG working group is very pleased that the uptake of the recommendations is gathering momentum, as evidenced by the growth of formal KBART endorsements. We have been actively working to promote the benefits of implementing the recommendations, and are thrilled to see that our message is getting through. We look forward to seeing more progress in the future.”

KBART has also made a contacts registry available for content providers and knowledge base developers to register their organization's information for downloading holdings metadata. The registry provides a list of contacts, URLs, and instructions relating to the transfer of e-resource metadata between content providers and link resolvers. Companies that have formally endorsed KBART are marked with a KBART logo on the registry.

KBART’s Phase II work is underway to develop a second recommended practice that will build on the Phase I recommendations. Knowledge base providers and their customers (primarily academic libraries) will benefit from provision of higher quality data by content providers. Publishers will benefit from accurate linking to their content and subsequently the possibility of increased usage.

For more information on KBART and the current Phase II work, visit www.uksg.org/kbart or www.niso.org/workrooms/kbart.

About KBART
KBART (Knowledge Bases And Related Tools) was set up following the 2007 publication of the UKSG research report "Link Resolvers and the Serials Supply Chain." Central to the efficient operation of the OpenURL is the knowledge base, which consists of data supplied by content providers including publishers. The report found that a lack of awareness of the OpenURLs capabilities and requirements is impacting the quality and timeliness of data provided to populate knowledge bases, and thus undermining the potential of the sophisticated OpenURL technology. UKSG partnered with NISO to commission the KBART Working Group to develop guidelines for best practice and provide educational materials. The core NISO/UKSG Working Group consists of representatives from libraries, knowledge base developers, publishers, intermediaries and other content providers, and is supported by a monitoring group of interested parties. Its Phase I report, KBART: Knowledge Bases and Related Tools (NISO RP-9-2010), and guidelines have been widely reviewed and tested by a wider group of information supply chain stakeholders. For more information, visit www.uksg.org/kbart or www.niso.org/workrooms/kbart.

Alexander Street’s Music Online Grows by Nearly 400,000 Recordings

January 7, 2011 (SAN DIEGO, CA) -- Electronic publisher Alexander Street Press announced today that its streaming music service for libraries and the education market has nearly tripled in size following the addition of close to 400,000 new jazz, world, and American music recordings.

“This is the largest single content release we’ve done to-date,” said Alexander Street’s senior music editor Liz Dutton, who explained that system-wide enhancements, process improvements, and search functionality upgrades have made the site’s rapid—and ongoing—growth possible. Said Dutton, “We expect to offer access to more than 750,000 recordings by mid-2011.” Other site enhancements include ten times faster search speeds; sound quality, which has increased from 64 kbps to 320 kbps for most recordings; and simplified search results display. Since mid-2010, the site has also supported on-the-go access for most mobile devices.

The range of new recordings across Music Online reflects the publisher’s commitment to providing affordable educational access to the highest quality recordings and record labels. Said Dutton, “Music education programs—and audiophiles served by public libraries—want and need not just a vast repertoire, but access to the very best performances, performers, and the highest quality recordings.“

New recordings were released across many of the Music Online databases, including 46,000 tracks into American Song, 61,000 tracks into Jazz Music Library, and 132,000 tracks into Contemporary World Music. Prominent highlights of the latest release include seminal live performances by Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Muggsy Spanier, and the Mills Brothers as well as albums from Sarah Vaughan, Otis Grand, Ike & Tina Turner, Eddie Dean, Bill Haley, Gene Autry, Rudy Vallee, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Willie Nelson, the Highwaymen, and James Brown. Record labels include Storyville Records, JSP Records, The Montreux Jazz Label, Jazz Unlimited, Daptone Records, JSP Records, Acrobat, and GNP Crescendo. The publisher plans another major release of 57,000 new classical recordings from EMI in late January.

Also new to Music Online are close to 140,000 popular music recordings—available only to subscribers of the entire Music Online: Listening suite—featuring pop, punk, musical theatre, hip-hop, and country recordings from twentieth-century artists such as the Sex Pistols, Chicago, a Flock of Seagulls, Tanya Tucker, Liberace, and Rod Stewart. Alexander Street Debuts Streaming Video Series of Milgram's Defining Experiments in Social Psychology

Alexander Street Press announces the addition of a six-film series featuring the innovative and often controversial experiments of social psychologist Stanley Milgram. This set is available for the first time in streaming format exclusively through Alexander Street.

The series centers around the defining experiments of Milgram’s career, most notably his revolutionary study on obedience to authority. The film Obedience includes the only authentic footage of Milgram’s famous 1961 experiment, in which subjects at Yale University were told to administer electric shocks of increasing severity to another person. The stunning results of the experiment, which showed that sixty-five percent of participants administered the experiment’s final massive 450-volt shock, remain relevant more than fifty years later as people continue to ask themselves, “Would I pull that lethal switch?”

Other films in the Milgram series include:

  • The City and the Self — A combination art and documentary film exploring the concepts of urban overload, selective attention, and cases like the murder of Kitty Genovese.
  • Conformity and Independence — An examination of psychology’s primary findings on why people conform, obey, and dissent in various social situations.
  • Human Aggression — An exploration of the major scientific principles governing human aggression, using examples from a youth gang to illustrate how aggression is learned and expressed.
  • Invitation to Social Psychology — An overview of the guiding principles of social psychology, including reenactments of experiments from renowned researchers like Asch, Bandura, and Zimbardo.
  • Nonverbal Communication — A collection of expert interviews discussing research theories on nonverbal behavior including gesture, expression, and body language.

A preview of this series can be found on the Alexander Street Press YouTube channel. Videos from the Milgram series are available individually or as a series, and can be purchased online in streaming video format or as DVDs.

Film On Wikileaks' Source Is New Release From Filmakers Library

OCTOBER 4, 2011 (ALEXANDRIA, VA) -- Filmakers Library, an imprint of Alexander Street Press, today announces the addition of The Forgotten Man: Private Bradley Manning and the Wikileaks Controversy to its catalogue of titles.

In The Forgotten Man, reporter Quentin McDermott tells the inside story of Private Bradley Manning, the alleged source of the classified documents published by WikiLeaks, and explores the disputes surrounding the scandal.

Like the controversy itself, this film begins with the shocking 2007 U.S. Army video, published by Wikileaks in April 2010, showing a group of mostly unarmed men being gunned down in Bagdad by an American helicopter. This sets the stage for an intense investigation into the reasons and personalities behind the release of the video and many other U.S. war files.

“Law, scandal, politics, journalism and espionage; sounds like a mystery novel but it’s current events,” said Linda Gottesman, Co-founder of Filmakers Library. “Scholars of many disciplines will find this film fascinating, not just for its value to possible research but for its new approach in coverage of this controversy.”

Featuring interviews with many key players – Daniel Domscheit-Berf, former spokesperson for WikiLeaks; Dean Baquet, Washington bureau chief for the New York Times; Adrian Lamo, former hacker who informed the authorities of Manning’s involvement; and Julian Assange, editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks – the details of this globally-publicized intelligence heist are played out in this film by ABC Australia.

The Forgotten Man is currently available for purchase on DVD. Starting in mid-October, this title will be available online in streaming video through Alexander Street’s Academic Video Online Store at http://academicvideostore.com, and as part of Alexander Street’s Filmakers Library Online collection.

A preview of this video can be found on the Alexander Street Press YouTube channel. New Release From Filmakers Library Explores Controversial Issue Of Gene Patenting

SEPTEMBER 27, 2011 (ALEXANDRIA, VA) -- Filmakers Library, an imprint of Alexander Street Press, announces the addition of Body Corporate: Who Owns Your Genes? to its catalog of video titles.

In Body Corporate, Australian reporter Andrew Fowler takes a closer look at the controversy surrounding the rights to genes in both the United States and Australia, attempting to answer one question: should we allow individuals and corporations to patent genes?

Taking an investigative journalism approach, Fowler examines the current legal battles surrounding gene patents and introduces viewers to families affected by patents that are currently in place for genes linked to heath issues such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, epilepsy and long QT syndrome; a heart condition that, at its most devastating form, causes the heart to beat too quickly.

“This film is both informative and, at times, heart wrenching,” explains Linda Gottesman, Co-founder of Filmakers Library. “Scientific scholars will surely benefit from the information provided through interviews, but the stories told by families help to put everything in perspective no matter what side of the debate you are on.”

Featuring interviews with top genetics researchers, including Dr. Wendy K. Chung of Columbia University, Dr. Sean Grimmond of the University of Queensland and Dr. Mark Skolnick, founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Myriad Genetics, “the high stakes battle over who owns your genes” is played out in this film by ABC Australia.

Body Corporate is currently available for purchase on DVD.
