Two New Databases in Psychology and Engineering

MULTIMEDIA CASE STUDY MODEL DEBUTS AT ALEXANDER STREET
Video, Audio, and Text Synthesized in New Psychology and Engineering Databases

(ALEXANDRIA, VA) – Alexander Street Press has introduced the next wave of digital learning products—case studies delivered via seamlessly integrated text, audio, and video—with its two newest collections: Engineering Case Studies Online and Psychological Experiments Online. Available on Alexander Street Press’s new interface, these multimedia collections allow students and scholars to easily find, compare, and share information in a broad range of media formats.

Engineering Case Studies OnlineEngineering Case Studies Online provides primary source materials for the in-depth analysis of key engineering failures. The case study approach to learning enables students to examine more than 50 of the world’s most frequently taught cases together with supplementary materials from more than 1,000 additional failures.

Using Alexander Street’s proprietary technology, the collection pairs 250 hours of video with 50,000 pages of text material. Users receive convenient, integrated access to documentaries, monographs, simulations, primary footage, maps, participant testimonies, blueprints, and more for an unprecedented 360-degree learning experience.

Psychological Experiments OnlinePsychological Experiments Online is similarly sweeping in scope, uniting the most important psychological experiments of the 20th and 21st centuries. More than 75 hours of audio and video recordings accompany 40,000 pages of primary-source documents to provide a nuanced, holistic view of the research that forms the foundation of contemporary psychology.

This collection highlights the experiments central to undergraduate psychology courses, from Solomon Asch’s conformity experiments to John B. Watson’s Little Albert study. It captures each quintessential study in unprecedented depth by incorporating never-before-digitized materials, such as the personal papers of Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo.

“So many high quality materials have remained inaccessible for so long because the technology hasn’t been able to support including them as holdings become more video-centric,” said Stephen Rhind-Tutt, president at Alexander Street Press. “It’s wonderful to arrive at a place where any informative, relevant piece of material, regardless of the medium, can be easily discovered by all who want to study it.”

The two collections launch on Alexander Street Press’s new interface, which provides access to dozens of features including synchronized scrolling transcripts, tools for creating and sharing video clips and playlists, and unlimited anytime, anywhere access to content.

Engineering Case Studies Online and Psychological Experiments Online are available to libraries worldwide via annual subscription or one-time purchase. No special setup or software is required—all you need is an Internet browser. For more information or to request a trial or price quote, email sales [at] alexanderstreet [dot] com

Insight Media, Inc. Joins Forces With Alexander Street Press, LLC

(ALEXANDRIA, VA)—Alexander Street Press announced today that it has acquired Insight Media, one of the largest distributors of video to the higher education market.

Insight Media, Inc. was founded in 1989 by Jeff Morris and Janet Olshansky to distribute video to educational institutions around the world. Elana Joffe joined in 1990, helping Insight Media become one of the largest such vendors, distributing to more than 90 countries. Most recently, it has become known for its comprehensive dance collection, its nursing and allied health training programs, and for popular and award-winning titles such as American Tongues, Quiet Rage, and Understanding Pina: The Legacy of Pina Bausch. Insight has also produced such titles as the History of Nursing series, How Results Can Be Misleading (the latest addition to Insight’s popular Research Methods collection), and Introduction to Critical Thinking.

Together Alexander Street and Insight Media now hold distribution rights for nearly 50,000 top-quality titles in the higher education market. This arrangement combines Alexander Street’s expertise in the development and sale of large-scale collections of streaming video to libraries with Insight’s expertise in selling individual titles directly to academics. Together, the companies will work closely with Insight’s partners to explore how best to develop new opportunities. The acquisition brings at least 10,000 new streaming titles to the Alexander Street video platform, which is already the largest in higher education.

Said Stephen Rhind-Tutt, president of Alexander Street Press, “I’ve long admired what Jeff, Janet, and Elana have achieved at Insight. They’ve been the largest and best distributor of Alexander Street’s titles in the past few years. We’re all very excited here at the opportunities this opens up!”

Jeff Morris, Janet Olshansky, and Elana Joffe will remain at Insight following the acquisition. Insight Media will continue to operate from New York City.

Alexander Street Press Now Offers Media Hosting Service

Alexander Street Press Now Offers Media Hosting Service

(ALEXANDRIA, VA)—Alexander Street Press today announced a new streaming hosting service for libraries. Libraries with streaming rights to content will now be able to host their music and video assets on a single, high-functionality platform—in effect providing one-stop streaming for their patrons.

Video and audio content will be streamed using Alexander Street’s new platform, which has been specifically built to deliver streaming media to libraries and higher education. Over 28,000 unique titles are now available on the interface, which is used by more than 4,000 libraries around the world.

Jordan White, product manager for the new hosting service, said, “Our video and listening platform is recognized as one of the best and farthest reaching in the industry. We’ve had a number of requests from libraries to use it for their own content. That’s what we’re making available now.”

All local content hosted on the platform will include features like fully searchable transcripts, discovery service integration, COUNTER-compliant usage statistics, MARC records, and annotation and clip-making tools that let library patrons find and use video far more effectively than with simple streaming solutions.

The first partner of the service—Tufts University—is expected to launch their content on the new interface before the end of the year. This will make thousands of music tracks produced by Tufts accessible to their patrons on the Alexander Street platform, allowing users to cite, analyze, annotate, and share materials as never before.

Libraries interested in partnering with Alexander Street to host their streaming content are encouraged to contact Kathleen Saylor, assistant editor, at ksaylor [at] alexanderstreet [dot] com or visit http://www.alexanderstreet.com/mediahost.

MEET THE PRESS ARCHIVES AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON STREAMING VIDEO
65 Years of Episodes To Be Released by Alexander Street Press

(ALEXANDRIA, VA) – For the first time ever, network TV’s longest running program—with its thousands of interviews, panels, and debates—will be available via streaming online video. The newest collection from digital publisher Alexander Street Press, launching this winter, will feature every surviving episode of Meet the Press, many of which have not been seen since they originally aired.

Alexander Street’s Meet the Press database will assemble more than 1,500 hours of footage—nearly the full broadcast run to date—in one convenient online interface for academic institutions. Rather than digging through archives in assorted formats and locations, hoping footage will be available, students and faculty will be able to explore this iconic series instantly from their computer or mobile device.

Since its television premiere in 1947, Meet the Press has cemented its position as an institution in broadcast journalism, airing interviews, panels, and debates with the newsmakers that shaped history. This collection will feature hundreds of iconic figures and moments from 1947 to present day:

  • Jackie Robinson discussing Civil Rights and his NAACP involvement (1957)
  • Fidel Castro during his first US visit since the Cuban revolution (1959)
  • Television’s first live satellite interview, with British Prime Minister Harold Wilson (1965)
  • Golda Meir’s account of continuing instability in the Middle East (1971)
  • Jimmy Carter’s  announcement of the US boycott of the Moscow Olympics (1980)
  • Richard Nixon’s personal reflections on the Watergate scandal (1988)
  • The award winning Senate Debate Series (2002–2006)
  • Colin Powell’s endorsement of Barack Obama for president, which pulled in a record-breaking 9 million viewers (2008)
  • Multiple appearances by Martin Luther King Jr., Indira Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, John Kerry, and other recurring guests

Meet the Press is unbeatable,” said Stephen Rhind-Tutt, president at Alexander Street Press. “This is a program that has defined generations. There is no end to what students, historians, and scholars can learn from this material, and we’re excited to see how patrons will use the collection to foster new connections and discoveries.”

Alexander Street Press’s Meet the Press collection will become available to academic, public, and school libraries worldwide via annual subscription or one-time purchase beginning this winter. No special setup or software is required—all you need is an Internet browser. For more information or to request a trial or price quote, email sales [at] alexanderstreet [dot] com

LEED, Laos, And Labradors: Fall Releases From Alexander Street Press

October 24, 2013 (ALEXANDRIA, VA)—Alexander Street Press has launched three academic film collections—Environmental Studies in Video, Asian Film Online, and Veterinary Education in Video. All three collections premiered to customers today on the publisher’s newly redesigned interface.

ENVV-150Environmental Studies in Video is a compendium of films covering all areas of the discipline, including sustainable development, climate change, biodiversity, food production, renewable energy, risk assessment, and more. Global in focus, the collection highlights environmental issues from dozens of countries across all seven continents and will grow to 500 hours of film.

“Environmental studies is an exploding field that impacts countless departments across the campus. It’s everywhere,” said Will Whalen, Vice President of Licensing at Alexander Street and the collection’s lead editor. “Engineering, public policy, international relations, biology and other sciences, dozens of departments will find value in this content.”
VETS-Brochure-Cover-200Asian Film Online unites 600 feature films, documentaries, and shorts and gives voice to filmmakers from 24 distinct countries across the region. More than 75 percent of the included films stream exclusively through this collection, adding new insights into discussions of Asian issues and cultures.

“We’re delighted to . . . [make] these important films available to libraries and educational institutions around the world,” said Stephen Rhind-Tutt, President of Alexander Street Press. “Alexander Street’s mission is to make silent voices heard, and these films are essential for the study of the Asia Pacific region.”
VETS-Brochure-Cover-200Veterinary Education in Video features high-definition video demonstrations of more than 500 procedures and techniques. Industry-accredited experts present the most up-to-date techniques for addressing the needs of small, large, avian, and exotic animals, skills for managing a veterinary practice, and more.

“Perfecting intricate techniques is vital to a successful veterinary practice,” said Greg Urquhart, Vice President of Business Development and lead editor of the collection. “But the nuance of many skills can’t be captured by a book. Our database makes veterinary education clear, precise, and accessible to the full spectrum of veterinary professionals.”

This trio of collections represents the first content to premiere directly onto Alexander Street Press’s new interface. This means all users of these collections can enjoy dozens of powerful features for learning and research, including discipline landing pages, high definition video, enhanced clip making, semantic facet browsing, one-click translations, and an instant citation exporter.

Environmental Studies in Video, Asian Film Online, and Veterinary Education in Video are available to customers worldwide via annual subscription or one-time purchase. For more information, or to request a trial or pricing information, email sales [at] alexanderstreet [dot] com.

Alexander Street Press Grows Evidence-Based Acquisition Forms Agreement With Leeds Metropolitan University

ALEXANDER STREET PRESS GROWS EVIDENCE-BASED ACQUISITION
Forms Agreement with Leeds Metropolitan University

(LEEDS, ENGLAND) – Following the recent launch of its evidence-based acquisition (EBA) model, Alexander Street Press has forged an agreement with England’s Leeds Metropolitan University, establishing the publisher as a key resource for metrics-driven curation of library materials.

Effective immediately, patrons of Leeds Metropolitan’s library will have unlimited access to Alexander Street Press’s complete suite of academic video titles—more than 23,000 titles—for one full year. At the conclusion of this period, university staff will use Alexander Street’s detailed metrics to evaluate the most-viewed titles and select those they’d like to incorporate into their permanent collection.

“It is fitting that Leeds Metropolitan University has made the strategic decision to use EBA to advance their streaming video holdings,” said Gareth Bish, UK and Ireland Sales Manager at Alexander Street Press, “particularly because this institution was instrumental in helping Alexander Street validate this new business model, which in turn helped make it available for libraries worldwide. This agreement signals Leeds Metropolitan’s commitment to improving the quality of the student experience and to supporting staff across the university with innovative teaching and learning resources.”

This agreement follows an inaugural deal made with Dundee University, and will further pave the way for libraries worldwide to add the most highly sought-after content to their library collections in a precise, cost-effective way. And because all video content within Alexander Street Press’s databases is carefully selected by expert editors, library administrators can rely on the quality and relevance of all materials to the academic populations they serve.

Claire Williams, Head of Learning Resources at Leeds Metropolitan University, said, “Access to this collection fits with our strategy of providing electronic access to established and innovative resources. The collection is already drawing interest and favorable responses from academic staff, who plan to use the material in teaching.”

Alexander Street Brings Running For Jim To Academic Libraries

(ALEXANDRIA, VA) – Filmakers Library, an imprint of Alexander Street Press, has added the award-winning film Running for Jim to its acclaimed catalog of academic titles.

The documentary, directed by Robin Hauser  Reynolds and Dan Noyes, chronicles the true story of high school cross-country coach Jim Tracy, who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis—also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease—in 2010.

Jim’s story first gained national attention in late 2010, when one of his team’s runners collapsed meters from the finish line at a California state championship. The 16-year-old student, aware that her coach was facing failing health and the twilight of his career, crawled across the finish line, securing the win and making Jim the most decorated high school cross-country coach in California history.

“The message of this film is remarkable,” said Andrea Traubner, editor at Alexander Street Press, “It will speak to student athletes and trainers, those in the health sciences and humanities, disability studies programs, and truly anyone who wants to have their spirit lifted.”

“We’re so pleased to be able to work with Alexander Street Press to share our film with academic audiences,” said director Robin Hauser Reynolds. “Every student, regardless of his or her focus, can gain something valuable from this powerful and inspiring story.”

Running for Jim has received critical acclaim and festival accolades worldwide, including the Audience Choice Awards at the 2013 San Francisco Independent DocFest and the 2013 Tiburon International Film Festival. It was also awarded the title of Best Documentary Film at the 2013 Soho International Film Festival.

Running for Jim is available is available from Alexander Street Press’s Academic Video Store on DVD and—soon—in online streaming format. For more information, or to learn more about related titles, please visit our Web site or contact orders [at] alexanderstreet [dot] com.
